SportLegs® really work. That's why they're guaranteed.  But how can anything so safe work so well?

One of the first things modern car tuners do to extract more performance is to reprogram the conservative stock rev-limiter chip.  You saw how SportLegs raises your Anaerobic Threshold "redline" in the graph on the last page.  Yet compared to people who try to do the same thing by taking painkillers before sports, taking SportLegs is much safer:  You don't reduce your body's sensitivity to the early warning signs of injury.  In fact, by reducing the lactic acid accumulation that is the major component of sports muscle pain, you've raised your ability to notice any early warning signs of injury.

As of 2004, exercise physiology professors teach that your body's Lactic Acid System is your main source of energy during the "sprint" part of "multiple-sprint" sports.  Like skiing.  Soccer.  Motocross.  Ice hockey.  Field hockey.  Lacrosse.  Or any sprint-length event, like Track.  Swimming.  Hill climbs on a mountain bike... or a road bike.  Wrestling.  Baseball.  Football...

Your body's Lactic Acid Sytem is what supplies energy whenever you're trying to exceed your opponent.  Whether your opponent's name is Bob, Gretchen, gravity, your personal best, or Father Time.  Taking SportLegs an hour before your first run, game or event helps tune your body's Lactic Acid System to do that a little better, with a lot less pain.  Here's why...

With the aid of radioactive isotope tracers, scientists have discovered the useful function of the Lactic Acid System (the "lactate shuttle"):  Muscles continuously produce and consume lactate as their preferred high-speed energy nutrient.  And during exercise, muscles actually produce more of this high-speed energy currency than they consume.  The problem SportLegs addresses is that the lactate produced by muscles is more acidic (thus termed lactic acid) than the lactate consumed by muscles:

“During short-term, high-intensity exercise, lactate accumulates as the result of lactic acid production being greater than its removal.  At a physiological pH, lactic acid, a strong organic acid, dissociates a proton (H+).  It is the H+ rather than the lactate ion that causes pH to decrease. Although lactate accumulation in blood is directly related to H+ accumulation in blood because the muscle cell membrane exports into blood both lactate anions and protons, in muscle the cause of acidosis is different.  All the glycolytic intermediates of glycolysis are weak organic acids and dissociate protons.  Further, as pointed out by Gevers (1977), the degradation of ATP results in H+ formation.  Thus, lactate accumulation is associated with acidosis for more than one reason, but it is important to recognize that it is unbuffered protons (i.e., H+) and not lactate anions that pose difficulties for the performer.  The H+ accumulation resulting from glycolysis and ATP catabolism as the result of lactic acid production can have several negative effects… [T]he lower pH may…slow glycolysis,… [interfere] with muscle contraction,…and stimulate pain receptors… Within the blood itself, H+ inhibits the combination of O2 with hemoglobin in the lung…  Hydrogen ion liberated into the blood and reacting in the brain causes severe side effects, including pain, nausea and disorientation.” 1

So it’s the acidity of this acidic lactate, or lactic acid, that causes the “burning” sensation familiar to seasoned athletes and weekend warriors alike.  Worse, related research has shown as it becomes more acidic, it travels across cell boundaries less quickly.  The “lactate shuttle” slows to a crawl, and lactic acid pools in your muscles. And you hurt. Worse still, you feel “out of gas”:  The energy represented by your lactic acid isn’t as readily exchanged as fuel.  So instead of powering your victory, it sits in your muscles, manifesting itself as evening ache, night cramping and even soreness the next day. Unless you’d taken SportLegs beforehand…

How SportLegs helps you do more, and hurt less.

The pure power of SportLegs is unlocked by your body’s natural digestive process.  When you take the premium, balanced calcium and magnesium salts of lactic acid inside SportLegs vegetarian capsules, these lactates are delivered to muscle tissues in an alkaline form:

“Because lactate is combusted [metabolized] as an acid (C3H6O3), not an anion (C3H5O3), the combustion of an externally supplied salt of lactic acid (CHO3H5O3¨+H++3O23H2O+3CO2) effects the removal of the proton taken up during endogenous lactic acid production (Gladden, L. B. and J. W. Yates, J. Appl. Physiol. 54:1254-1260 (1983)).  A side benefit of alkalizing the plasma by feeding lactate [is] to enhance movement (efflux) of lactic acid from active muscles into plasma, a process which is inhibited by low (relative to muscle) blood pH (Brooks, G. A. and D. A. Roth, Med. Sci. Sports Exerc. 21(2):S35-207 (1989); Roth, D. A. and G. A. Brooks, Med. Sci. Sports Exerc. 21(2):S35-206 (1989)).  Moreover, maintenance of a more normal blood pH during strenuous exercise would decrease the performer’s perceived level of exertion.  The conversion of lactate to glucose in the liver and kidneys also has alkalizing effects by removing two protons for each glucose molecule formed (2C3H5O3+2H+C6H12O6).  Thus, whether by oxidation or conversion to glucose, clearance of exogenously supplied lactate lowers the body concentration of H+, raising pH.”2  …thus helping naturally counter the painful, frustrating acidity of lactic acid.  And since “lactate removal is concentration-dependent; lactic acid needs to be raised to a higher level to force its removal”3,  taking SportLegs before exercise can help prepare your body to increase its lactate removal.

Safer than aspirin, Tylenol®, Advil® or Aleve®

SportLegs vegetarian capsules contain nothing but European natural-source calcium and magnesium “lactate salts” that are so safe they qualify as FDA “Generally Recognized As Safe” (“GRAS”) food additives.  That’s safer than aspirin, acetaminophen (Tylenol®), ibuprofen (Advil® or Motrin®), and even naproxen sodium (Aleve®).  And these over-the-counter pain relievers can cause well-documented side effects:  Reyes Syndrome.  Blood thinning.  Liver damage.  Kidney damage.  In comparison, the net calcium and magnesium SportLegs capsules contribute are good for you.

Still, it’s smart to check with your doctor before taking ANY supplement.

"My University of Washington professors say the idea behind SportLegs is ingenious, and we can’t understand why somebody didn’t try this sooner." -Triathlete and sports physiology student Cameron Chesnut, Post Falls, Idaho

"As a Pro team coach, it's my job to know which sport supplements really work.  SportLegs is the first sport supplement I've personally tested that does exactly what it promises." -Derin Stockton, Team Manager, Santa Cruz Bicycles/Intense Tire Systems race team, Temecula, California

"C'mon.  Just a couple of minerals and a vitamin before sports?  If this stuff really worked, especially for sports at altitude, Pro mountain bike racers would be using it."

20-year-old Australian Trent Lowe has used SportLegs the last two seasons.  In 2005, he helped make the prestigious Subaru/Gary Fisher Pro mountain bike squad the winningest team in the sport.  Seeking an even bigger challenge, Trent has signed to join the 2006 Discovery Channel Pro road Cycling Team!

SportLegs user Sandra Tomlinson is the 2005 World Champion in 24-hour Women's Solo mountain bike racing in her highly competitive age category.  She also took a category win at the 24 Hours of Adrenalin in Conyers, Georgia October 8-9, 2005.  Sandra, a 36-year-old cardiac critical care nurse and single mother of three, says, "In 24 hour racing, it's the 'burn' that breaks your spirit.  With SportLegs, I get no 'burn', not even in the climbs."  Clearly playing at the top of her game, Sandra doesn't mind spreading the word: "There's nothing healthier that can do as much for your riding- and racing- as SportLegs."

Victory is sweet: Willow Koerber gulps champagne after her first NORBA National Cross-Country win in June 2004.  In the September 2004 issue of Mountain Biking magazine, she told editor Daisy Bauer SportLegs was what helped her widen her lead by another minute with each successive lap in the most remarkable victory of the season.

27-year-old Willow was signed to the prestigious Subaru/Gary Fisher team this year.  And she still trains and races with her SportLegs.

"Hi, just wanted to let you know that after buying it for skiing, I started using your product for bicycling.  To be perfectly honest, its pretty amazing.  Even without Advil, which previously was a post workout given (and sometimes pre-workout), I experience much less soreness and quicker recovery.  This is besides the workout itself also being more intense due to the higher thresholds attainable.  To put it in terms that every avid cyclist would relate to, I can push about a cog or two bigger gear with the same perceived effort and lactic acid buildup.  To the same athlete, that is indeed very significant.  Are you sure there's nothing in there illegal or unhealthy?" -David Morris, Gush Etziyon, Israel

"After you've defeated cancer, you get really particular about what you put in your body.  You don't want to trigger a relapse.  SportLegs' simple, healthy ingredients make the cut.  And so does the performance.  I'd been trying to win a triathlon for four years.  This year, I added SportLegs to my training regimen.  And here I am on the way to my first victory in the Charleston Sprint Triathlon on July 10, 2005." -Charles Blackmon, 55, Kershaw, SC

            120-capsule bottle label

As the label shows, SportLegs' primary ingredients are nothing more than premium natural-source compounds of calcium, magnesium and vitamin D, inside vegetarian capsules.  No additives, fillers, flow agents or excipients that might upset your stomach.  Listed "Other Ingredients" are primarily the natural cellulose-derived vegetarian capsule, which includes a tiny amount of water.  The sucrose, cornstarch, gelatin and dl-alpha-tocopherol (Vitamin E) are in truly microscopic amounts.  They're ingredients of the "beadlet" coating around the tiny particles of Vitamin D to maintain potency of this sensitive vitamin during production and the product's three-year shelf life.  The Vitamin D is refined from soy oil, so we list the remote possibility of soy's presence in accordance with stringent FDA allergen labeling requirements.  Healthy, and legal for international competition.  So how do they do so much more than ordinary calcium-magnesium supplements?

The form determines the function.
The patented SportLegs difference is that we use premium lactate (not lactose) compounds of these healthy vitamins and minerals.  When you take SportLegs an hour before sports, they raise your blood lactate level, just like what ordinarily happens during sports.  Elevated blood lactate is the signal which tells tells muscles not to make so much lactic acid.  The result: Your muscles don't make more lactic acid than they need for you to perform at your very best.  With less painful muscle "burn" during sports, and less soreness afterward.  Depending on how competitive you are, you'll either think of SportLegs as a pain preventative, or a performance enhancer.  Or maybe a little of both.  Either way, you're going to love it.

SportLegs helped 36-year-old Gale Dahlager of Jackson Hole achieve her goal of earning a spot on the U.S. National mountain bike racing Team in 2003 and 2004.  Gale says, "You get awfully picky about what sport supplement you take when you have to pee in a cup after the race.  If you do take something, it has to be legal.  And it has to really work.  Otherwise, why take the risk?"

Performance improvements confirmed in University tests.
In Fall 2003, Ohio's Kent State University performed clinical studies under Exercise Science Professor Dr. Ellen Glickman, a Fellow of the respected American College of Sports Medicine.  In formal randomized, double-blind trials, twelve subjects aged 19-28 who took SportLegs an hour before testing were able to continue exercise against steadily increasing resistance  an average 11.2% longer compared to placebo capsules.  VO2max aerobic capacity increased 12.8%.  Most important, Anaerobic Threshold, the point where you run into the agony of muscle "burn" increased 15.6%.  For comparison, most legal performance enhancers show performance increases in low single-digit percentages.

"I wish I'd known about this stuff years ago.” -Gary Smith, Waddell, Arizona

“SportLegs gave me back the feeling I could go ski anytime, anywhere, with anybody, and not worry about the leg ache.  And I wasn’t sore either, afterwards.  I’m sold.” – Ski shop owner Wendy Christensen, Winter Park, Colorado

“And even though I’m playing better, longer, I’m not as sore the next day.  I would have expected to be more sore, not less.  SportLegs are amazing.” – Soccer coach Paul Fekete, Chagrin Falls, Ohio
